Earlier: Two men have now died, after they were shot inside a Springfield apartment this morning, police confirmed.

Sgt. Jeffrey Flores said one of the victims was able to get outside and find someone to call 911 before he collapsed in the parking lot.

Officers received that call around 1:30 a.m. and responded to the complex on East John Street, he said.

They found the second victim inside the apartment.

Both men were taken to Springfield Regional Medical Center, Flores said.

Police have not released any information about the events leading up to the shooting. They said they're looking at all possibilities, and it is possible the two men shot each other.

The men did know each other, and the older of the two lived in the apartment, Flores said.

They have not said if they recovered any weapons from the scene.

Officers are still on scene investigating.

The case marks the third and fourth homicides in Springfield since Easter.

On Easter morning, 17-year-old Jeff Wellington was shot. Another Springfield teen, Tyrin Hawkins, is facing murder charges in that case.

On May 30, George Walker Jr. was shot and killed. Police are still investigating who was behind the trigger in Walker Jr.'s death. Police have been asking eye witnesses or anyone with information about the morning Walker Jr. was shot to come forward and aid in the investigation.
