Police: Springfield man sexually abused a child

A Springfield man was recently arrested after authorities said he sexually abused a child he knew.

Charles Smiddy, 50, of 2348 N. Limestone St., is charged with two counts of rape of a child under 13, 4 counts of gross sexual imposition and pandering obscenities involving sexually oriented matter involving a minor.

The charges came after an investigation into the allegation Smiddy sexually abused a child he knew over a period of two years, according to a Springfield Police Division report. Detectives interviewed Smiddy during the investigation, where he denied the abuse, but police gathered evidence from Smiddy's cell phone and presented their case to a Clark County grand jury.

He is booked in the Clark County Jail on $250,000 bond. Smiddy was indicted on the charges on August 4 and arrested by the area SOFAST task for on August 6.

No trial date has been set in his case.
