Police: Teen probably knew her killer

Suspect likely someone in Chelsea Johnson’s ‘close circle,’ they say.

FAIRFIELD — Police have met with the Butler County Prosecutor’s Office to discuss the death of 15-year-old Chelsea Johnson, but have yet to name a suspect, Fairfield Police Chief Michael Dickey confirmed Tuesday.

Asked if he had a suspect in the case, Dickey said, “I’m not going to go that far. We’re trying to gather enough evidence to convict ... what I am saying is that we believe it was someone in her (Johnson’s) close circle,” he said.

Johnson’s body was discovered April 16 near a creek by the Heritage Glen apartments between River Road and Pleasant Avenue. The Butler County Coroner’s Office determined that the Fairfield Options Academy student had been stabbed.

However, police have insisted that Johnson’s death has no connection to the case of Katelyn Markham, a woman who was last seen in that area in 2011, and that they do not believe that Chelsea’s killer would look for other victims.

“We do not believe parents have to take any more precautions than they ordinarily do,” Dickey said, maintaining that Johnson likely knew her killer.

Johnson was seen at an AmeriStop near her residence at about noon on April 15, the day before she was found dead, police said. Police said Johnson was last seen April 15 in the downtown area.

Her mother, Vicky Fible, reported Johnson missing the next morning, and her body was discovered that evening.

Dickey said two detectives have been working on the case.
