Suspect in MUM credit card theft auditioned for ‘American Idol’

MIDDLETOWN — Two years ago, while preparing to audition for “American Idol,” Jim Surgenor said he’d be a “household name.”

Now, the Middletown man is making news, but not because of his singing ability.

On Wednesday, Sept. 29, Surgenor was charged with felony forgery, felony theft and receiving stolen property for allegedly using a stolen credit card at more than 20 retail locations, according to police.

Surgenor, 27, is accused of stealing a credit card from Miami University Middletown’s administration office, police said.

Middletown detective Steve Winters described Surgenor as “an absolute con man.”

Winters said Surgenor, not a student at MUM, told police he found the credit card, but Winters said the card was located in a secure location on campus.

Police identified Surgenor using the credit card off video surveillance. An enhanced video showed Surgenor’s license plate, authorities said.

Surgenor has a history of theft convictions in the city, according to police. He was charged with theft in November 2008, according to court records.

Winters said the police are receiving complaints from residents who accused Surgenor of attempting to scam them. Call Winters at (513) 425-7737 if you have information regarding Surgenor.

He is scheduled to be arraigned at 9 a.m. Friday, Oct. 1 in Middletown Municipal Court. Bond on each charge was set at $5,000.

He is being represented by attorney Jacob Long.

In the fall of 2005, Surgenor announced he was running for Middletown City Council, but he pulled out before the election.
