Suspect in scrap metal theft arrested

Aaron Mertz, 33, of 214 Pratt St., Apt. 4, Bellefontaine, was arrested Sunday after he allegedly stole scrap metal items from a rural Bellefontaine residence.

Deputies of the Logan County Sheriff's Office responded Saturday to the residence of Bill Gibson, 3553 S. U.S. Route 68, Bellefontaine.

Gibson reported seeing several of his personal belongings at D&J Scrap Metal Yard. He then checked his storage units and discovered signs of a break-in. Scrap metal items, including hydraulic jacks and bolts were missing.

The scrap metal yard identified Mertz as the person who sold Gibson's items. He was arrested at his residence and was transported to the Logan County Jail.

About two weeks ago, Mertz also was arrested for criminal trespass, breaking and entering, and theft relating to a break-in at a barn in the area of Stockyard Road and Township Road 56. The stolen items were recovered at a local scrap metal yard.

During August, the defendant also was arrested relating to a theft from an elderly woman's home in Huntsville. Mertz was arrested for breaking and entering and theft.
