Suspected thief busted after jaunt through weeds

A suspected car thief who ran through woods and weeds off Guthrie Road in Dayton is under arrest after a K-9 officer ran him down near the Stony Hollow Landfill.

Dayton police and Montgomery County sheriff’s deputies walked the suspect out of the woods and weeds about 5:06 p.m. and told our videographer, “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” when asked whether he stole a car.

Police tell us they think the man fled from a traffic stop in a Mercury Sable and abandoned it in high weeds, woods and grass at Frytown Road and South Gettysburg Avenue.

He was running through the woods and weeds at least 20 minutes. He was lying on a road near the Stony Hollow Landfill, off South Gettysburg Avenue, and took off running when the K-9 picked up his scent. He was caught about 100 yards later and taken into custody.

Police tell us he is wanted on two felony warrants out of New Lebanon — and now for the stolen car taken in Dayton earlier today.

The suspect had what appear to be dog bites on his back. He was taken to a Dayton medic unit, then to a hospital. He’ll be taken to the county jail after that.
