Teens face multiple robbery charges

HAMILTON — Two Middletown teens were indicted Wednesday, Jan. 20, on multiple felony charges for allegedly robbing several people at gunpoint and running from police.

Tevin Barefield, 16, of Mount Vernon Street, and Justin Stegall, 17, of Crawford Street, will be put on trial as adults. The duo, arrested in October, are facing five counts of aggravated robbery with a gun specification, receiving stolen property and two counts of failure to comply with police.

According to Middletown police, three people who had just pulled up to a Central Avenue residence on Oct. 17 were robbed by two black males with red bandanas around their faces. The victims said the robbers pointed silver handguns at them and demanded “everything they had.”

Less that 60 minutes later, teen girls were robbed by males wearing bandannas around their faces in the 200 block of Charles Street, police said.

Officers spotted and attempted to stop a vehicle matching one the suspects were in at Tytus Avenue and Elwood Street, but the driver sped away, according to the police report.

The chase continued through downtown, ending when the driver lost control of the 1999 Land Rover and struck a light pole at Central Avenue and Clark Street. Both teens took off running and were caught a short distance away on First Avenue, according to police.

The boys, both 16 at the time of the offense, were taken into custody and charged. The Land Rover was reported stolen from South Main Street, police said.

The case has been assigned to Butler County Common Pleas Judge Michael Sage, but a court date has not yet been set.
