Woman robbed right in front of police

A young woman escaped serious injury today after a suspect assaulted and robbed her.

Witnesses told News Center 7 that shortly after 2:30 p.m., a Dayton police officer and a bystander witnessed a man knock down a young woman, take her cell phone and money and run away.

The bystander, Donald Brooks, and the officer chased the robber and stopped him a short time later.

The suspect, whose identity has not been released, was handcuffed and taken into custody.

The victim, Melinda McCumber, told police she was walking around just killing time while waiting for a bus. Brooks said that’s when the suspect pushed her to the pavement.

Brooks told us that something had to be done.

The incident remains under investigation.
