Firefighters install smoke alarms, replace batteries

Bethel Twp. firefighters went door-to-door today at the Sunshine Mobile Home Park to install smoke alarms and hand out batteries.

Firefighters said recent fires at two of the mobile homes raised alarm. In one case, there wasn’t a smoke detector in the mobile home and in another case, the batteries in the smoke alarm were dead.

Firefighters installed smoke alarms if residents didn’t have them, and replaced batteries if needed.

It’s suggested that smoke detector batteries be replaced twice a year, smoke alarms are tested monthly and replaced every 10 years.

According to the state fire marshal’s office, more than 75 percent of fatal fires in Ohio occur in homes without working smoke alarms, which also cut the risk of dying by fire in half.
