The city wants to buy the former Roberds property near the Interstate 75 interchange, providing a cornerstone for West Carrollton’s long-range multi-million dollar entertainment district plan along the Great Miami River.

Acquiring Carrollton Plaza, 13.75 acres on the southwest quadrant of the interchange, is part of a $3.2 million project to demolish buildings at 1100 to 1192 E. Dixie Drive, a “prominent piece of real estate” targeted for entertainment use, Economic Development Director Michael Lucking said.

Much of the building space, officials said, has been vacant for years after furniture and appliance retailer Roberds Inc., a staple in West Carrollton for decades, decided in 2000 to close all of its 15 stores and two distribution centers in Ohio, Georgia and Indiana.

“We’re getting a very prominent piece of real estate,” Lucking said. “This is the gateway to the community. It’s an important piece of property for us going forward.”

West Carrollton City Council is set Tuesday night to consider a financial package to buy the land and pay for the demolition. Mayor Jeff Sanner said he expects approval of the package.

“I think it’s a bold move for the city,” he said.
