Rock would run against incumbent Debbie Stabenow, a Democrat.
One Republican has entered the field, Lena Epstein, but Stabenow has been in the office since 2000 and has won both her re-election campaigns by double-digits. Rock’s celebrity, ties to Michigan, his working class message in his music and his friendship with President Donald Trump could change the dynamic of the race.
Rock, who has shared his conservative leanings since becoming a mainstream music star in the late 1990s, supported Ben Carson in the GOP presidential primary, but backed Trump when he won the nomination. He also performed at the 2016 Republican National Convention in Cleveland.
Rock was part of a controversial set of photos with fellow Republicans Sarah Palin and Ted Nugent when they visited the White House several months ago. The three took photos with Trump behind the resolute desk in the Oval Office, but also made mocking poses in front of a painting of former First Lady Hillary Clinton.
