Greenon High School Student Killed Following Accident

A Clark County teenager was killed Monday after the car he was riding in slammed into a tree. The accident happened around 11:30 a.m. on Rebert Road near the city of Enon.

The State Highway Patrol said Matthew Smith, 16, died as a result of his injuries. He was a student at Greenon High School.

Authorities said Smith was not feeling well at school, so his friend Jonathon Dewitt, 17, was driving him home when the accident happened. Dewitt was taken to a Springfield hospital and treated for his injuries.

Officials said Smith was trapped inside the car for a time. Medics and firefighters from Enon, Mad River Township, Hustead and Bethel Township tried for more than an hour to free him.

Investigators said the teens were heading west on Rebert Road when the car hit a guardrail and crashed into a tree. Authorities said the impact was so strong, it spun the car all the way around.

Smith was taken to Miami Valley Hospital, where he later died.

Investigators are trying to determine if wet roads may have been a factor in the accident.
