As temperatures rise throughout the Miami Valley, the Humane Society of Greater Dayton is reminding people to take extra steps to keep their pets safe and healthy in the heat.

Anyone who notices an animal outside for an extended time period without protection from the heat should call the Humane Society’s cruelty/neglect hotline at 855-PETS-911 or 855-738-7911.

For any dogs left outdoors, people can also call the Animal Resource Center at 937-898-4457.

To protect your pets from severe summer heat, the Humane Society suggests the following:

  • Have fresh, clean water available for pets at all times to keep them cool and hydrated.
  • Make sure pets have access to shelter to escape from the sun that will keep them cooler, such as a covered structure or a shaded area.
  • Avoid putting pets in an enclosed shelter during hot weather. Air cannot flow as freely and the temperature inside will become hot and harmful quickly.
  • Avoid leaving pets in vehicles where they can overheat in a matter of minutes.
  • If exercising with pets, go in the morning or evening when temperatures are more manageable and the sun is not at its peak.
  • Keep coolants and lawn chemicals away from pets. If ingested, they can make pets sick or kill them.
  • Groom long-haired pets to keep them cool. Both haircuts and regular brushing will help air reach your pet’s skin more easily.
  • If your pet is panting excessively, lethargic, showing signs of stress or changing their behavior they may be suffering from heat-relate problems. If you notice any of those signs, contact your veterinarian immediately.
  • For pets who like water, take them for a dip in a lake or fill up a baby pool where they can take a swim and cool down.
