Fire officials said an open gas line in unit 33 was ignited by an open flame, most likely from a cigarette lighter.
Investigators were able to make their determination based on extensive investigation of the fire scene and multiple interviews with witnesses.
Several people were injured in the fire, including the occupants of unit 33. Both of the occupants remain hospitalized.
The apartment building has been released back to the property owner and insurance company.
