Centerville schools treasurer dies after bicycle accident

Centerville schools Treasurer Mitch Biederman died Monday morning after suffering serious injuries in a bicycle accident earlier this month.

Superintendent Tom Henderson confirmed the news Monday afternoon after sending the information to school district staff.

“Mitch and I worked together for the last 11 years and I don’t think I’ve ever met an individual who also approached work and life with such a positive attitude,” Henderson wrote to staff. “He was a proud, caring husband and father who enjoyed life fully.”

Biederman, 55, was hired as Centerville’s treasurer in 2009, the same summer Henderson became superintendent. He had previously been treasurer for Reynoldsburg schools near Columbus, working in that district for 11 years. Before that he spent 10 years with the Greene County Educational Service Center.

Biederman oversaw the Centerville school district’s finances ever since, going through a retirement and rehire process in 2015, winning the Auditor of State Award with Distinction last winter, and helping prepare the district for this fall’s tax levy campaign.

Biederman was a fitness enthusiast who biked and competed in many running races around the region, from 5Ks to marathons.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mitch’s wife, Lisa, and their three children,” Henderson said. “We will do everything we can to support his family during this very difficult time.”

Information about services was not yet available Monday.
