The goal of the meetings is to deepen parent-teacher effectiveness through modules such as Respect & Communication, Equality and Decision-Making, Competence, Parenting & Learning at Home, Commitment & Volunteering, Advocacy & Collaborating with the Community and Trust. Parents who attend will receive a $25 Wal-Mart gift card incentive provided by the grant - one per student.
Esther Dennis students select school themes
Esther Dennis Middle School students have helped to identify the school’s major behavioral themes for the year. In early September, each student had the opportunity to vote for the five themes they believed to be most important. The themes Loving, Self-Control, Manners, Loyal, and Responsibility received the most votes. In mid-September, students participated in a contest to design a poster featuring a superhero Polar Bear and incorporated the selected themes. Contest winners received a VIP lunch on Sept. 25, and their posters will be displayed in the school throughout the year.
Community Parade Oct. 18
Northridge High School’s 49th Annual Homecoming/Community Parade will be held Sunday, Oct. 18 at 2 p.m. The parade theme is “We are Family.” Making appearances will be the Northridge Marching Band, flags and drill team, football players, homecoming queen and court and a Dayton Dragon’ mascot. Anyone interested in entering a float or community or church group should contact Margie Lairson at 277-7488. Flea market entries are available by calling 275-7469. Car show entries are available from Ohio Cruisers Car Club at 890-0772.
Morrison students get free support
John H. Morrison Elementary School started its partnership with Ohio Reading Corps Oct. 5. Three trained tutors are providing support to third grade students at no cost to the district, using the Read Live program to improve reading fluency skills of third graders who need additional support to be “on track” for grade level reading. Students will use Google Chromebooks to access the web-based intervention program and tutors will coordinate support based on literacy data and teacher recommendation.
Open house held at Timberlane
Timberlane Learning Center hosted a Title I Family Open House Sept. 22. There were 97 families that came out to see what students had learned since the start of school. Principal, Tabitha Hardin held the annual Title 1 meeting to share and discuss the school-wide plan. Information was also provided to parents about the impact on learning of good attendance at school. Timberlane also held a special attendance assembly on Oct. 2 to recognize 65 students who had perfect attendance during the month of September.
