Students protest loan interest rates at Ryan rally

A handful of students protested in Oxford Wednesday before Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan gave his campaign speech.

Miami senior Dan Otto spoke about the high cost of education and the burdens placed upon students.

“When it comes to students here we know where (Ryan’s) policies are and we know better,” Otto said. “When Ryan became a congressman he forgot what it was like to be a student at Miami.”

Britain Pilkington, a senior at Miami, said she’s studying Spanish education in the hopes of becoming a teacher one day. She said President Barack Obama places high value on ensuring affordable higher education opportunities are made available to all Americans, as well as quality teachers.

“Every individual who desires a formal, higher education should be able to attend college affordable,” Pilkington said.

“Romney is jeopardizing our ability to pay for tuition.”

Pilkington added, to quote her mother, that the Romey/Ryan campaign stands for “Regress and Relaxation,” at a time when the country needs to “get back to work.”
