Kurt Denton Crouch, 48, was charged in Dayton’s U.S. District Court with assault of a federal task force officer with a deadly weapon, discharge of a firearm during a crime of violence and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Crouch was sentenced to six years for each individual charge earlier in December, but he can serve the sentences concurrently.
He will also spend three years on probation once released from prison.
A criminal complaint said Crouch had four weapons in a motel room on Miamisburg-Centerville Road Nov., 2018, when investigators found a rifle and drugs.
Crouch was charged in Montgomery County Common Pleas Court with having weapons under disability and carrying a concealed weapon.
In that case, Crouch’s public defender entered a not guilty by reason of insanity plea and asked the court to order an evaluation of Crouch’s mental condition at the time of the alleged offense.
Then before midnight on Jan. 28, while out on bond in the county case, Crouch allegedly fired shots while in a room at the Motel 6 in Washington Twp.
Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office deputies were told Crouch “had been drinking heavily and had an argument with his girlfriend,” according to the federal complaint.
The complaint said SWAT and FBI Safe Streets Task Force officers responded to Motel 6 as a search warrant was drafted.
After the search warrant was signed at 4:18 a.m. Jan. 29, the complaint said, bean bag rounds were fired into Crouch’s room.
After investigators heard what sound like a shot, barrier-penetrating deployed into the room as one task force officer held a ballistic shield as officers breached the door.
The complaint written by FBI special agent Nicholas Graziosi said gas munitions were fired into Crouch’s room and that Crouch was taken into custody at 8:04 a.m. Jan. 29.
Investigators found a Bushmaster semi-automatic rifle on the bathroom floor, two loaded rifle magazines and a loaded 9mm Glock magazine plus spent rifle casings along with suspected bullet holes in the windows. The federal complaint showed Crouch was convicted in 2006 in Lake County, Fla. of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Crouch also was indicted for having weapons under disability, obstructing official business and resisting arrest stemming from a July 29, 2018 incident. Crouch also has previous felony convictions for domestic violence, receiving stolen property, vandalism and breaking and entering, according to county court records.
