AFCEA Dayton-Wright Chapter offering Wolfenbarger scholarship

General Janet C. Wolfenbarger (1958- ) is the first woman to attain the rank of four-star general in the US. Air Force. She was a member of the first class of female cadets to graduate in 1980 from the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. A 1976 graduate of Beavercreek High School, the campus was renamed for her in 2013. Wolfenbarger spent many of her active-duty years at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, culminating her military career as commander of Air Force Materiel Command.

Dayton-Wright AFCEA will again offer the Gen. Janet C. Wolfenbarger scholarship in 2019 to the child of a parent or guardian (civilian employee, military or contractor) associated with Wright Patterson Air Force Base. This year’s award will be in the amount of $1,000 to one qualified student.

The student must be pursuing a STEM-related (science, technology, engineering and math) degree program and have recently exhibited strong leadership skills and community involvement. Applicants must have an overall cumulative 3.3 GPA in high school or, if enrolled in college, an overall 3.5 GPA in all college courses and a 3.4 GPA in their primary STEM-related degree program.

Additional weight is given to children of military parents or guardians (active-duty or retired), graduates from Beavercreek High School (Wolfenbarger’s alma mater) and to female graduates. Applicants must submit a standard application, a transcript or current coursework printout showing cumulative GPA, and a 500 to 1,000-word essay addressing “My Goals, My Plan, and What I’ve Already Accomplished.” The highest-rated qualified applicant will be selected as the Award Recipient based on weighted rankings.

The Gen. Janet C. Wolfenbarger scholarship was established in recognition of the general’s life-long contributions to the United States and the U.S. Air Force. A true STEM champion and exceptional leader, she worked to cultivate Dayton regional growth.
