Strong storm downed trees, limbs, knocked out power across area

A strong storm moved through the area late afternoon and early evening, leaving thousands of people without power in its wake.

Now, it will be mostly cloudy and breezy with an overnight low of 59 degrees, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect until 10 p.m. for Butler, Champaign, Clark, Darke, Greene, Logan, Miami, Montgomery, Preble and Warren counties.

The thunderstorm arrived around 4:30 p.m. and did not exit the Miami Valley until after 6 p.m.

In Kettering, a car was covered in wires after a tree toppled at an apartment complex in the 3200 block of Gracemore Avenue and brought down two utility poles.

Thunderstorm wind gusts of 46 mph were recorded at 4:28 p.m. at the Wright Brothers Airport, and wind gusts of 61 mph were recorded at 5:15 p.m. at the Bellefontaine Regional Airport, according to the NWS.

Earlier, the national Storm Prediction Center said the Ohio Valley faced an enhanced risk of severe storms today. The enhanced threat designation is rare for the area.

The forecast for Thursday through Sunday looks perfect for outdoor activities.

On Thursday, skies will be sunny with a high near 81 degrees.

Skies will be sunny again Friday, with a high near 83 degrees.

Saturday and Sunday’s forecast calls for sunshine and highs in the mid-70s.
