Air Force Research Lab to mark International Pi Day with event

The Air Force Research Laboratory will mark International Pi Day, with its first-ever Maker Fest at the Tec^Edge Innovation and Collaboration Center at the Wright Brothers Institute.

Pi Day represents the date of March 14, 2015, or in mathematical language of Pi, that’s 3.1415 followed by countless digits to mark the circumference of a circle to its diameter. To make it even more accurate, organizers plan to start the event at 9:26 a.m. Saturday, or the next three numbers in the sequence.

AFRL Maker Fest is meant to spur do-it-yourself interest in science, technology, engineering and math, said Lester McFawn, director of Wright Brothers Institute.

The fest will have about 40 different demonstrations, from kite making to electronics to 3-D printing and a roaming robot, organizers said.

“It’s basically about getting people building things and learning how to do those things,” said Robert Lee, Wright Brothers Institute open innovation project manager.

Presenters will also stage talks on technical topics and projects, he said.

All of the events are at the institute at 5000 Springfield St., Suite 100 in Riverside. More than 240 people have registered and all ages are welcome at the free event, officials said.
