Charles Ritter Collett (1921-2001) has a career as a newspaper sports editor which has lasted for more than 50 years and through three newspapers: the morning Dayton Journal, the Dayton Journal Herald, and the Dayton Daily News. He began his career in journalism in 1946 when he was separated from the Air Force at Wright-Patterson AFB, and was soon named sports editor, a title he retained until he retired in 1990. A highlight of his career came on Aug. 2, 1992 when he was inducted into the writer’s wing of the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown as the 43rd winner of the J.G. Taylor Spink Award. He has been involved in many charitable and civic causes, including AIM for the Handicapped. Ritter Collett is the author of seven books, including a history of sports in Dayton put together for the city’s bicentennial celebration.–Inducted: 2003
