UD announces new engineering dean

DAYTON — The University of Dayton has named Tony Saliba as the new dean of its School of Engineering.

Saliba, Wilke Distinguished Professor, is chair of the department of chemical and materials engineering and a three-time UD graduate. His appointment was announced Wednesday, Aug. 12.

“Dr. Tony Saliba received strong support from all areas of campus,” said Daniel J. Curran, university president. “He’s an excellent relationship builder who’s been able to successfully recruit students and faculty, bring in research dollars and philanthropic support, and build alliances across campus.”

UD has nearly 1,700 engineering students, according to university officials. The School of Engineering helped UD to be ranked No. 1 among the nation’s Catholic universities for all sponsored engineering research and development and all sponsored non-medical research.

As dean, Saliba plans to take a greater leadership role in leveraging the Dayton region’s strengths in engineering innovation, according to UD officials.

Saliba holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in chemical engineering and a doctorate in materials engineering. He has been a full-time faculty member since 1986 and he became department chair in 1994.

Saliba chaired the “Vision 2005” strategic plan for the School of Engineering, coordinated with the College of Arts and Sciences on a $22 million renovation of the campus science center, and worked with industry to develop full-time, co-op and internship opportunities for students.

Saliba replaces his brother, Joseph Saliba, who in March was named provost — the university’s chief academic officer.

Tony Saliba lives in Beavercreek with his wife, Susan, and children, Joey, Justin and Alaina.
