Area food nonprofit seeks location donation for free grocery store

After multiple grocery stores have closed around the greater Dayton area, a Dayton-based nonprofit is looking to fill the gap.

With God’s Grace Food Pantry wants to open a free grocery store in western Dayton, Trotwood or Northridge. The charity needs one large item to do it, though: a building.

With God’s Grace Food Pantry is looking for a donation of a vacant building in one of the target locations, either with the entire building being donated, or if the owner wants to keep ownership, the cost of rent being donated each month.

“I was at the Food Summit for Montgomery County speaking with several county and city elected officials,” the nonprofit’s director Nicole Adkins said. “I told them that the only way to end hunger in the Miami Valley is for a free grocery store accessible to people that don't have the funds for food.”

The idea for the free grocery store would be to partner with other agencies to provide assistance to families that qualify.

“The goal is for these families to be able to utilize the store for one year and then have the resources to not need to use the store after that,” Adkins said.
