“I don’t believe we would be the greatest country on earth if it wasn’t for our military,” Millikin said. “I don’t believe they get the appreciation they deserve. It really weighed on my heart that these people were away from their families, and being shot at every day.”
The group has about 12 consistent volunteers and has had thousands of helpers during the past nine years.
Some of the most requested items from the troops are beef jerky, Slim Jims and individual drink mix powder.
“We can’t get enough of those,” Millikin said. “They also ask for healthy snacks. People are always sending candy and chips, but we get requests for granola bars and power bars.”
Some fun items sent to the troops include electric griddles, bread makers and fishing poles.
Many businesses help the group get necessities to the troops.
Health Foods Unlimited donates vitamins and protein powder, Payless donates socks, Buffalo Wild Wings donates bottled sauce and the Brookville VFW 3288 helps with shipping costs.
Future goals include shipping items already in stock and meeting troops when they return home. Millikin encourages people to reach out to the group to volunteer or support family members.
“Let us know if you have a family member or friend overseas and want to send a package,” she said. “We definitely support our local people first.”
