Business in city is growing and hiring

CENTERVILLE — The state last week approved a six-year job creation tax credit for DimcoGray Corp., 900 Dimco Way, to expand its operations in Centerville.

Ohio officials said June 28 that the project is expected to create 33 jobs and retain 50 current positions.

Mike Sieron, president and CEO of DimcoGray, said those positions will be created over the next three to five years, and that the process already is under way.

“We hope to hire for the first (job) later this month,” said Sieron, who added that the application period has passed for that position.

“We have committed to hire three positions this year, but we could very well beat that.”

DimcoGray, which was founded in 1924, is a longtime manufacturer of commercial and industrial knobs and handles.

“They might go on a Caterpillar tractor, and also could go on John Deere equipment,” Sieron said of his company’s products.

“But they could also be on the chair you’re sitting on right now.”

During the last couple of years, Sieron said the company has been in a transition period.

Due to heavy competition from overseas companies, DimcoGray started looking for new avenues for their products in a more sustainable market.

“We settled on making plastic components for medical devices,” Sieron said.

On June 15, the company announced the launch of DG Medical, a unit dedicated to “supplying the contract thermoplastic molding needs of medical device OEMs.”

Sieron said that plastic is one of the most commonly used material in medical devices, and they are regulated by the Food & Drug Administration.

“As a result (of the regulations), you find that the majority of the manufacturing remains here in the U.S.,” Sieron said.

“It is resistant to imports. It also is an area of emphasis for the state of Ohio.”

Sieron said new hires will include a range of pay grades, since DimcoGray will need engineers, regulators and people to work in its plant.

“We see manufacturing leading the way out of (the recession),” he said.

“We got pounded in late 2008 and 2009, but now business is incredible. We are shooting out of it faster than we went into it.”
