Campaign gives the ‘gift of warmth’ to tornado survivors

Area nonprofits are partnering to provide clothing to children and communities impacted by the Memorial Day tornadoes.

“Project: Gift of Warmth” is a partnership among the Miami Valley Long-Term Recovery Operations Group, Crayons to Classrooms and LoveLight.

The campaign aims to collect new hats, gloves, socks and coats that will be distributed to schools in areas devastated by the storm. It launches Thursday and runs through Dec. 31.

“A lot of families lost everything (in the storm),” said Laura Rapoch, Crayons to Classrooms Fund Development manager.

“A lot of the areas, particularly in Montgomery County, those are high-poverty areas, areas where families and children don’t have the basic necessities to keep themselves warm in the wintertime,” she said. “We are looking to wrap those kids in warmth this holiday season.”

The initiative includes areas where clothing can be dropped off, as well as an Amazon Wish List to purchase and ship items directly to Crayons to Classrooms.

- The Dayton Foundation Lobby – 1401 S. Main St., Dayton (M-F, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.)

- Harrison Twp. Community Center – 5945 N. Dixie Drive, Dayton (M-F 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.)

- Pedz Dental - 5671 Far Hills Ave., Dayton (M-Th 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; F, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.)

- Trotwood Government Center - 3035 Olive Road, Trotwood (M-F, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.)

- The Barrel - 857 W. Central Ave., Springboro (M-Sun., 11 a.m. to 2:30 a.m.)
