Carlisle graduate dies in motorcycle crash

A Carlisle High School graduate and wrestling great died Thursday in a motorcycle crash.

Around 1:45 a.m., Tyler K. Savage, 24, of West Carrollton, was thrown from his 2012 Suzuki motorcycle after crashing into the back end of a semi-trailer on Interstate 75 near the Ohio 725 exit.

Savage — a 2006 graduate of Carlisle High School — died at the scene, according to crash investigators.

During Savage’s senior year of high school he earned the school’s only state title in sports when he became wrestling champion in the 112-pound Division III class.

The City of Carlisle celebrated Tyler Savage Day on March 10, 2006 in honor of his achievement.

“Hopefully this serves as a wake-up call for young people, both in school and recently out of school, that when you’re behind the wheel actions have consequences and life is precious,” said Matt Bishop, Carlisle High School principal.

Bishop’s first year as principal was when Savage claimed the state title. He said the class of 2006 was tight-knit and this loss will be very hard for the school.

Mark Townsley, Carlisle athletic director, said he was Savage’s wrestling coach during eighth grade and three years in high school. “Tyler was always really hyper in class and on the go,” Townsley said. “He had a high energy level and was a real hard-nosed kid.”

Townsley said Savage likely would have placed for the state championship his junior year of high school except for breaking his collar bone.

“A lot of kids (now) didn’t know him but they know his name,” Townsley said. There is a banner in the school’s gymnasium and items in a showcase celebrating the state title.

Townsley said Savage also played baseball and football and went on to wrestle for Notre Dame College near Cleveland.

Townsley said Savage was to be married this summer.

“He was a very intense individual and loved to compete,” Townsley said. “It’s a sad day for Carlisle.”

The cause of crash remains under investigation by the Ohio Highway Patrol.
