Centerville police investigating at least 20 thefts from cars

Centerville Police are issuing a warning after at least 20 theft complaints were filed overnight after items were stolen from vehicles in the city, according to police.

Police said the thefts were mostly from unlocked vehicles Friday morning.

The thefts were reported in residential areas along South Franklin Street and Officer John Davis said they are continuing to receive reports.

Police reviewed surveillance footage and spotted a group of at least five people exiting a silver Jeep, possibly a Liberty or Cherokee, in a parking lot at 105 Virginia Ave.  All five people left the area.

Officers believe that vehicle is involved in the thefts, Officer John Davis said.

About an hour later, a stolen van from the area parked next to the Jeep and several people were seen emptying items from the stolen van, police said. The people then left the area in the van.

Around 4 a.m., a person gets into the Jeep and leaves, police said.

Anyone with information on these crimes can contact Centerville police at 937-433-7661.
