Centerville to target patrols for safety

Five highly trafficked Centerville roadways will receive extra attention from law enforcement after it was determined they have the highest accident rates in the city.

Drivers should expect cruisers and radar speed signs on Wilmington Pike, Alex Bell Road, Franklin Street, South Main Street and Far Hills Avenue.

According to Centerville police, moving violations such as speed, assured clear distance ahead, improper lane changes, red light violations, driver inattention and seat belt violations will be strictly enforced.

“We can’t be everywhere at once, so we will concentrate our efforts based on what we found,” said Officer John Davis.

The analysis, which is based on data collected at the end of 2014, is a quarterly practice for Centerville police.

Davis said the results were not a surprise: “We’ve had recurring problems on these roads.”

Jesse Kim drives to work at Picasso Nails at the Crosse Pointe Center off Alex Bell Road every morning.

“I see about one or two crashes every month,” Kim said. “I think that’s a pretty sizable problem we’ve got.”

Washington Township resident Dawn Freeman agreed.

“(Far Hills) 48 and Whipp is the worst. I always see cars running the yellow light at the last possible minute. It can be very, very scary,” Freeman said.

Davis said speed enforcement is one way of lowering the accident count in these areas — but the rest is up to drivers.

Kathy Parlett, a Miamisburg resident who shops in Centerville, said she tries to be vigilant when she is on the road.

“You have to watch out for other drivers all the time,” Parlett said, “because you never know what they’re going to do.”

In January of this year, Davis said, a driver caused a crash near the intersection of Clyo and Bigger Roads because she was eating her lunch while driving.

“Just drive. Everybody’s trying to do everything on the road but drive,” Davis said. “Just drive.”
