Chalk the Walk open to those who like to draw

VANDALIA — Two very different kinds of artwork will be a part of Vandalia’s ongoing 50th anniversary celebration.

On July 2 and 3, people can make their mark during the Chalk the Walk display at Recreation Center/Sports Complex, 1111 Stonequarry Road.

The first-time event is open to families, artists or anyone who wants to draw, said Betty Cochran, chair- woman for Chalk the Walk.

Those who register and pay the $5 fee will have a 7-by-7 foot designated site along the complex walking path marked with their names. They will also get a 48-piece box of color chalk pastels to use.

“It’s not limited, and open to anyone at any (artistic) level, Cochran said.

The city’s Cultural Arts Commission is promoting chalk the Walk.

Artists who work professionally may choose to bring their own materials, she said. Participants must register by June 15 and include a sketch of their drawing.

Three cash prizes, $150, $100 and $50, will be awarded to the top three displays.

In September, five artists will begin creating images out of large blocks of limestone over a two-week period.

The sculpture symposium, called Vandalia Chiseled, also at the Vandalia Recreation Center, will allow the public to witness the blocks become images that will later be placed at locations throughout the city, said City Council member Candice Farst.

The five artists, who were chosen from among 21 applicants, will be creating the artwork from Sept. 4-18,

Farst said. The Public Art in Vandalia Committee is organizing the event.

Farst said the five pieces, which will reflect Vandalia’s history and traditions, would be placed throughout the city next year. The locations have not yet been decided.
