Champaign sheriff looking for 3 in counterfeit $100 bills case

Three people are being characterized as persons of interest in an investigation involving the passing of counterfeit one-hundred dollar bills in Urbana and West Liberty, according to the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office, which is asking for the public’s help in tracking down those individuals.

Tuesday night, the sheriff’s office Facebook page featured a series of photos of a male and a female, believed to be two of the people involved. A third person deputies want to speak with is not pictured in photos the office released to the public.

The sheriff’s office and police in Urbana and West Liberty obtained reports of subjects using large bills to pay for small purchases to get their change in legitimate currency, according to the sheriff’s office.

A surveillance camera recorded the subjects in a dark color 2007 Mazda four-door sedan bearing Ohio license plate GJP 2353. Witnesses described the subjects as speaking with “Jamaican” type accents.

If you have any information about any of the three or if you recognize them in the photos that accompany this report, you are asked to contact the sheriff’s office at (937) 653-3409.

If you have contact with any of them, you are asked to contact the Champaign County Communications Center immediately at (937) 653-3409 or 911.
