“Homeless individuals and families who suddenly acquire an apartment need towels and bedding and pots and
pans as well as food and clothing, so we supply those needs as well as personal hygiene products,” said Panning.
“Social workers bring us the names and circumstances of the individuals and we gather the items from our vast
inventory to fill grocery bags.”
Heine stresses the fact that everything is clean and usable; clothing is within five years of being in fashion and toys come complete with batteries.
“We accept donations every day. But, Tuesday is our day to work from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.,” Heine said. “Twenty to 30 social workers come at four to pick up what our 15 volunteers have ready for them. The average number of filled grocery bags is between 35 to 50,” she said
.
A board outside the main supply room states the results of the month: 139 children and 66 adults received clothing: 105 families and 288 individuals received household supplies: food went to 86 families and 250 individuals.
Also noted on the board: heavier clothing is needed.
The pantry is on the lower level of the church to the left of the entrance doors. Donated items may be dropped off in the maroon cubicles in the pantry hallway.
“We ask that all donations be in bags or boxes of manageable weight for women volunteers to handle,” Panning said.
