City Council approves incentive package for Akers Packaging

A home-grown manufacturer is planning a $15 million plant expansion, which will add 27 new jobs and more than $1 million in new payroll in the city.

And Middletown has offered Akers Packaging Services Group, a 49-year-old manufacturer of corrugated packaging materials and boxes, an eight-year, 50 percent Job Creation Incentive Grant equal to the amount of income tax to be collected on the new payroll those jobs will generate.

Akers Packaging is planning an expansion of its Middletown operations, 2820 Lefferson Road, to replace an aging corrugator and plan for future growth. The 49-year-old Akers Packaging Services Group manufactures corrugated packaging materials and boxes with 10 plants in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois.

The expansion will include a 136,000-square-foot addition to the Middletown facility, which is estimated to cost $5.5 million, and to purchase the corrugator and supporting equipment, which is budgeted to be $9.5 million. The project is scheduled to begin on Sept. 30 and be completed by Dec. 31

In turn, the city will provide an eight-year, 50 percent Job Creation Incentive Grant equal to the amount of income tax collected on the new payroll. The city is also offering a 10-year, 75 percent property tax abatment and a $70,000 training grant.

The expansion will add 27 jobs over the next 18 monhts with an additional payroll of about $1.43 million. The company currently has 150 employees with a payroll of more than $8.7 million at the Lefferson site. The company — which has plants in Middletown, Cincinnati, Loveland, Columbus and Van Wert in Ohio — has 232 employees in the state.
