Clayton continues discussion about guns

CLAYTON – City council is continuing it’s discussion about restricting the use of firearms in the city.

City council debated an amendment to an ordinance that restricts the discharge of a firearm within the city limits at its Aug. 4 meeting. The discussion included the right of residents to defend their property and provide for their personal security.

The use of firearms is currently only allowed if the person is not within 1,000 feet of an occupied structure and if there is an immediate threat to someone’s personal security and safety. If dealing with a nuisance animal, then trapping needs to be the solution.

City council has been working on the ordinance for several months, city manager Richard Rose said in July. City officials are trying to pass a law that would accommodate the city’s mixture of farmland and residential areas.

The issue was not resolved and discussion is expected to continue. CASEY LAUGHTER
