UPDATE @ 8:36 p.m.: A resident, who was smoking a cigarette, spilled lighter fluid as she was trying to refill a lighter and that likely caused the fire at her home on Utah Court, Dayton District Chief David Wright said.
Crews dispatched on the call found a chair and other furniture on fire when they arrived, he said.
The resident told them she dropped lighter fluid on the furniture, which caught fire. She tried to put out the fire before she decided to get out safely, Wright said, something he advises everyone to do instead of trying to put out a fire on their own.
“Small fires can become large fires very, very quickly,” Wright said.
He estimated the damage to the contents and structure at $2,000. Red Cross will have to be called to help the resident find lodging for the night, he said.
Utah Court was closed to traffic about 90 minutes because of the incident.
Crews are investigating the cause of a house fire Monday night on Utah Court in Dayton.
Fire crews were dispatched just before 8 p.m. on a report of a possible structure fire. That was upgraded minutes later to a working structure fire.
There have been no reports of any injuries.
We will update this developing report as information is made available.
