Dayton man sentenced to 14 years in K-9 Club deadly shooting

A 23-year-old Dayton man convicted in a 2018 deadly shooting at the K-9 Club in Jefferson Twp. was sentenced to 14 years in prison.

Alphonso Hughes Jr. pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter, aggravated assault and having a weapon while under disability on Dec. 28, according to Montgomery County court records.

He was also ordered to pay $3,811.25 in restitution Thursday.

On April 9, Hughes reportedly shot and killed 67-year-old Bobby Avery at the Germantown Pike bar.

Hughes was initially indicted on murder, felonious assault and having weapons under disability in May, court documents show.

The voluntary manslaughter charge was submitted in December.

The murder charge was dismissed following Hughes’ guilty plea.
