The crew also dried out portions of the building that were drenched during the fight to contain the fire but otherwise remained intact. Computer equipment supplies and business records were removed to a secure location. Drapes and linens also were removed and taken for professional cleaning.
The future of the restaurant, which has operated on U.S. 42 since 1991, initially as Der Dutchler, remains uncertain though VanNatta said it was Dutch Corp.’s “desire to remain a valued part of the Waynesville community.”
“The steady stream of supportive Der Dutchman friends continues to pass through the outer parking lot to see the devastation first hand,” VanNatta said. “All are shocked and saddened by the damage to the beautiful building and grounds that hold wonderful memories of good food and fellowship for so many.”
Dutch Corp. will give an update to the situation on Monday, VanNatta said.
Firefighters were called to the family restaurant shortly before 9:30 a.m. Wednesday morning with reports of the fire. About 50 people were inside the building when the fire erupted but all escaped without harm. Fire walls in the building contained the fire primarily to the kitchen area, but the state fire marshal still estimated $1.5 million in damage was done to the building and equipment inside. The fire was ruled to be accidental by the fire marshal.
