Driver faces aggravated vehicular assault for head-on crash into deputy

An arrest warrant was issued for a 23-year-old Dayton man indicted in a September head-on crash into a Montgomery County Sheriff’s deputy in Harrison Twp.

Markell A. Hinton is charged with aggravated vehicular assault and vehicular assault, both felonies, and two misdemeanor OVI charges, according to a Montgomery County grand jury report released Tuesday.

According to the indictment, Hinton allegedly had marijuana in his system at the time of the Sept. 25, 2018, crash that injured deputy Jeff Sanger and shut down Shoup Mill Road for nearly six hours.

Hinton was driving a Chevrolet Impala at a high rate of speed when he lost control, crossed the median and struck Sanger’s cruiser head-on near Riverside Drive, according to reports.

Hinton is scheduled to be arraigned March 26, or sooner once he’s in custody.
