At 6 a.m. more than 8,500 were without power and as of 9 a.m. almost 4,500 were still in the cold this morning.
The Duke Energy media line states that the most common cause of outages is equipment malfunction or severe weather instances. The area has experienced frigid temperatures and high wind gusts within the past 24 hours.
