Easley Centerville’s Teacher of the Year

Kim Easley said her passion for France and the enthusiasm of her students make her job exciting, and the school district honored her work last month by naming her Centerville City Schools’ Teacher of the Year.

Easley has taught French for 11 years, the past seven of them at Centerville High School. District personnel director Deb Crump called Easley “a true professional with an innovative style,” saying the energy level in her classroom is always high.

Easley recently found a video of a play that was on stage in Paris, and taught the students a song from the play.

“It makes it feel so fresh and vital,” she said. “I told them, ‘If you went to Paris tonight, you could see this play.’ I’m always trying to weave the connection that this is a real language that people speak, that kids their age speak. I try to make it real — teach them some slang, teach the politics and the art.”

The other six nominees for teacher of the year were: Julie Marten (Magsig MS, fine arts), Amy Ruggiero (Tower Heights MS, intervention specialist), Janet Currin (Watts MS, fine arts), Dana Duckro (Centerville HS, math), Michael Pekarek (Centerville HS, American literature), and Traci Hale-Brown (Centerville HS, media).

Easley is now a nominee for the state Teacher of the Year award.
