Fire damage $150K; Bethel Twp. family displaced

A fire Thursday afternoon caused about $150,000 damage to a home.

Crews were called around 4 p.m. to the 2100 block of South Union Road on a report of hay bales on fire near a residence.

“Once they arrived on scene, they found the hay bales were next to the structure and had caught the structure on fire,” said Andrew Goings, investigator with the Bethel Twp. Fire Department.

A homeowner initially tried to put out the hay bales using a fire extinguisher, but then called 911 after they were unable to put it out.

“It is unlivable at this point,” Goings said.

No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is under investigation, he said.

“Due to the extreme cold we were having, we needed extra manpower,” Goings said, along with water because there aren’t hydrants in the rural area near Medway.

In addition to Bethel Twp., crews from fire departments in Bethel Twp. in Miami County, New Carlisle, Enon, Springfield Twp., Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and Fairborn responded.
