The husband and wife were in the back yard when the wind took flames from the back of the house to the interior and into the attic area, the chief said. They tried to throw water on it, then called for help. They were not injured.

“They thought they could put it out,” Wallace said. “Fire travels fast in the wind.”

Wallace confirmed the investigation is focusing on a cigarette as the cause.

He said the damage is such that the family will not be able to live in the home for quite a while.

No one has been injured, he said, and the preliminary investigation indicates that a cigarette might have ignited the initial fire.

Crews were dispatched to the 200 block of Dean Drive just after 4:30 p.m. on a report of a working fire on a single-story brick single-family residence.

We have a crew on scene and we will update this developing report as warranted.
