Flooded basement sparks fire in Harrison Twp.

A water main break caused one flooded basement after another in Harrison Twp. Monday, and one home's furnace shorted out and sparked a fire.

Crews were removing trees around the water main break to get to the affected area. Water will be shut off during repairs, disabling water supplies to approximately 20 homes in the area of Sugartree Drive and Timber Lane.

The repairs are expected to be completed early this morning, but it is still undetermined when water will be restored to the affected homes, said the Montgomery County Environmental Services office.

The water issues began in Harrison Twp. Monday afternoon. Crews from Vectren and the Montgomery County Water Department were servicing a water main break in the area of Timber Lane.

Shortly after 3 p.m. firefighter responded to the 4900 block of Sugartree Drive when a fire broke out in the basement of a home.

Harrison Twp. Battalion Chief Sean McNeil said the water in one of the home's basements caused the furnace to short out, which started a fire.

The water, which caused the fire to start, also put it out, as no flames were showing when crews arrived, McNeil said.

The flooding led to homeowners using sump pumps to get the water out of their basements, but McNeil said one home had about three feet of standing water.

McNeil said crews from the water department tracked the source of all the water to a main break in the area of Timber Lane.

Those crews continued to work to shut the source of the water off.

Vectren was on scene marking gas lines because excavation will be necessary to make repairs, McNeil said.

"We've had a couple water main breaks like this in this area," McNeil said. "This is probably the worst one we've had in recent history."
