McGee, a Mason resident, opened McGee’s Courts 4 Sports five years ago on Reading Road. Local basketball and volleyball leagues keep the sports emporium hopping daily.
McGee said he was the first to bring Futsal, a form of soccer played on wood floors, to the area.
He estimated 800,000 patrons flock to Courts 4 Sports each year. His neighbors Wall-to-Wall Soccer and Gym Nation also draw huge numbers and he wanted to give all the guests of the area something extra.
“I tried to create an atmosphere that’s not just sand volleyball,” he said. “I didn’t want to get into the labeling aspect of it. I wanted to create and atmosphere for adults and families alike.”
The restaurant will be open year-round and outside amenities — seven sand volleyball courts, eight corn hole sets and two kids play areas — will be in service from April until the weather turns cold in the fall.
Geeters’ menu will feature everything from steaks to healthy wraps and typical pub items. McGee said the restaurant itself can host 100 patrons and the outdoor patio area, with its gazebo style outdoor bar, can probably fit as many as 250 people.
Why would a former NFL star be running a basketball/volleyball/Futsal venue? The 5 foot, 10 inch player said basketball was always his first love, “but God didn’t give me the frame to fit the role.”
McGee wore number 85 for the Bengals from 1986 to 1997. How does he feel about sharing his number with flamboyant Chad Ochocinco?
“We get along. Between Chad, myself and Isaac Curtis who had it prior to me, it’s been a very fortunate number according to the fan base and just to be a part of that is an outstanding achievement,” McGee said.
