The 2019 Fire Prevention Week will kick off with a Fun Friday program Oct. 4 from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Prairies Child Development Center (Bldg. 6933) on Spinning Road at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. It will feature fire safety education and activities and lead into Fire Prevention Week Oct. 6-12.

According to Fire Prevention Chief Larry Osterhage of the base Fire Department, “In collaboration with the 88th Force Support Squadron, this year’s Fire Prevention Week kickoff promises to be a great time with many exciting activities for children and the entire Wright-Patterson AFB community.”

Firefighters from the base along with other local firefighters will be on hand Oct. 4 to show off their fire apparatus and specialized rescue equipment.

This year’s FPW campaign – “Not every hero wears a cape. Plan and practice your escape!” – works to educate everyone about the small but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe.

Did you know? In a typical home fire, you may have as little as one to two minutes to escape safely from the time the smoke alarm sounds. Escape planning and practice can help you make the most of the time you have, giving everyone enough time to get out. Plan ahead for your escape. Make your home escape plan and practice today.

In addition to the many firetrucks and displays, there will be a “Firefighter Challenge” area for kids to explore, bouncy house and carnival games. The Fire Safety “Hazard House” will be on hand as well. Other activities will be scheduled throughout the remainder of the week, including visits to child care facilities and tours of Wright-Patterson’s three fire stations.

Firefighters will be on hand to accommodate visitors during normal duty hours throughout Fire Prevention Week. To arrange a visit to any of the stations, or for more information about Fire Prevention Week, call the base fire department at 257-4075.

“We strive every day to get our message out,” said Osterhage. “We invite you to stop by our event, bring your children and enjoy yourselves while exploring everything we have prepared for you. We hope the location and collaborative effort with 88 FSS will maximize our outreach goals to meet you and provide great fire safety information.”
