The leak, reported around 9:45 a.m., only displaced one household next to the leak for a few hours, said Vandalia Fire Capt. Duane Stitzel.
He said a 2-inch gas line was ruptured, and that Vectren was able to stop the leak and repair the line.
No natural gas was detected inside a nearby home, but it was evacuated as a precaution, Stitzel said. The incident did not result in any injuries or illness, he said.
