Grenade found in storage locker

VANDALIA — Vandalia police closed a section of National Road on Sunday, Oct. 17, after a grenade was found in an abandoned storage locker at Crossroads Store & Lock, 865 E. National Road.

National Road was closed for about two hours while a bomb squad from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base removed the grenade for “safe disposal,” according to a Vandalia police dispatcher.

A section of National Road between Larry Avenue and Brown School Road was closed from about 2:30 p.m. to 4:25 p.m., said Vandalia police Lt. Dan Swafford.

A car dealership across the street from Crossroads Store & Lock closed during the incident and was the only other business affected, Swafford said.

A crew cleaning out abandoned storage lockers at the business found the grenade a little before 2:30 p.m., brought it to the office and called police, Swafford said. “We told them, ‘Put it down, we’ll be there shortly,’ and we responded,” he said.

No information was available about the locker’s former owner, Swafford said. The incident remains under investigation, he said.
