High water in Springfield

Heavy rain that hit the region Thursday afternoon caused lots of street-level flooding in Springfield that included floating manhole covers and a report of a floating car.

Sgt. Nick Holt, Springfield Police Division, said reports began coming in just before 9 p.m. Most of the water had relented by 10:30 p.m.

The highest depth is being estimated at 2 ½ feet deep, he said.

Holt said there were several confirmed reports of floating manhole covers, forced from their holes by the water.

There also was a report of a car floating along Broadmore Boulevard, he said, but an officer sent to look for the vehicle could not confirm the sighting.

City public works crews have replaced most, if not all, of the manhole covers, the sergeant said.

Here are some of the street closings that resulted from the high water:

U.S. 40 (East North Street) at Water Street was "basically a river," he said.
