MIDDLETOWN — New jobs will be up for grabs at the SunCoke Energy plant as the hiring process for its managers and supervisors is under way.
According to Kathleen Williams, business services representative for Workforce One, those applying to become operations team leaders and maintenance team leaders must do so at their local Workforce One or job center locations. Prospective employees must submit an application and a resume and will be notified via e-mail if they are selected to move ahead in the process.
Other management positions are also available, and information on those can be found at your local job center.
The process, which will take several months, involves several rounds of assessment tests, which will be administered by Miami University Middletown and Butler Tech, said Paula Polyak, human resources manager for the new plant, which is being built off Yankee Road near the Monroe border.
The application process for hourly workers will begin in January, Polyak said, and additional information will be released closer to that time.
SunCoke officials said the company expects to hire more than 100 people by the time it begins operations in September — more than the original estimate of 75 jobs released by the company when the project was first announced.
Mike White, senior vice president of operations, said judging from the state of the economy and the amount of applications the company received for its Granite City, Ill., plant, he expects the hiring process to be competitive.
Applications for supervisor positions will be taken through Dec. 22.
SunCoke’s $360 million plant will supply up to 550,000 tons of coke — a steelmaking raw material — and 50 megawatts of electricity to AK Steel’s Middletown Works.
AK Steel is contracted to buy coke and electricity from the new plant for the next 20 years.
SunCoke is a wholly-owned business unit of Sunoco Inc., which announced in June that it would spin SunCoke off in the first half of 2011.
